BAFTA Awards 2023: Viola Davis and Angela Basset Earn Top Nominations

The British Academy Film Awards have officially released the nominees for the 2023 BAFTA Awards, and among them, young talent dominates as several first-timers have been honoured. Among the newest EE Rising Stars are Daryl Mccormack, Sheila Atim, And Naomi Ackie.

14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories—including Angela Bassett, who has dominated the awards season thus far with wins for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards for her work in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—received their first BAFTA Film nomination. Four of the six nominees for Best Director are earning their first nominations, including Gina Prince-Bythewood of The Woman King.

Naomi Ackie, who played Whitney Houston in the most recent biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, was selected one of the 2023 EE Rising Stars by BAFTA earlier this week. Along with Irish actor Daryl McCormack, who played the title role in the BBC series Peaky Blinders, Sheila Atim, who featured in The Woman King, was also included.

The 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards will take place on February 19 and will be broadcast in the UK and around the world at 7 p.m. on BBC One & BBC iPlayer. See the Black celebrities who have been nominated by scrolling down.
