This Zambian Soldier Earns Promotion After Helping a Pregnant Woman Deliver Baby Boy

In Zambia, a soldier has hugged the spotlight positively after he helped a pregnant woman deliver her baby.

According to BBC, the soldier Lance Corporal Humphrey Mangisani had planned for the pregnant woman to be taken to the hospital for delivery on a motorbike, but her delivery time came while they were in transit.

“I had to help her in a maize field while it rained,” Corp Mangisani said, “I risked my work by being absent from camp to help her,” the corporal said to Zambia Reports.

Mangisani said he used a razor blade he found in his bag to cut the umbilical cord after he successfully delivered the baby boy. He then transported the baby to the hospital to ensure he was healthy.

When asked what spurred him to fill in the role of a midwife, Mangisani said his training as a soldier has modeled him to be a risk taker.

The soldier’s heroics have earned him a promotion to full corporal and a chance to name the baby, which he named Raymond Tembo.

Mangisani has also been praised by his commander in the army who said the act will improve the relationship between the army and civilians. Brig. Gen. Kelvin Kanguma said Mangisani proved “that a soldier is someone who can help”.
