Sudan Finally Exits US Terrorism List

USA Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Sudan PM Abdallah Hamdok in August

The United States has finalized the removal of Sudan from its list of states that sponsor terrorism.

This was revealed in a document by the US treasury department finalized on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

According to the document, “The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is amending the Terrorism List Governments Sanctions Regulations… to implement the rescission of the designation of Sudan as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.”

The US drafted Sudan into the terror list when Sudan hosted al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and other wanted militants.

But, in 2020, the two countries agreed to again form diplomatic ties, making Sudan the third Arab state — after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain — to move to normalize relations with Israel in 2020. After Sudan, Morocco also established diplomatic ties with Israel.

The removal was a major win for civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and his government.
