Mr. Eazi, Ayra Starr, Femi Kuti: Our Top Picks For January

The COVID-19 lockdowns have sadly meant no live concerts, so artists, in attempt to make up for the lack of show money, are releasing more music to boost their streaming income. As a result, we got to hear a lot more new music in 2020. It seems 2021 is continuing in the same vein as there has already been so much new music to listen to and we are glad for it.

Here are some of our favorite releases over the last month.

Mr. Eazi ‘The Don

I think it is fair to say that Mr. Eazi doesn’t get the credit he deserves. His name is often left out of the conversation about big African artists by most fans but he has surpassed a billion streams on Spotify. ‘The Don’ is the first release from his upcoming EP, ‘Something Else’, and is produced by Killertunes. It’s a song that will be sure to get your head bumping and will also get the girls whining their waists.

Tomilola ‘Mo Yato

Tomilola’s vocals on this song are so powerful as she takes control of the beat and sings beautifully throughout the song. With the way she sings, you’d be forgiven if you were thinking that she has been doing this for years, though it is only her sophomore single! She’s an exciting talent and definitely one to watch.

SirBastien ‘Girlfriend‘ ft Naya Akanji

Producer, singer, and songwriter SirBastien and fellow emerging artist Naya Akanji team up to deliver this sweet melody that makes you feel like it’s the last day of the school year and you’re about to head off to the beach with your partner to enjoy the first days of summer. This sound is completely unexpected yet refreshing to hear from someone who is based in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Ayra Starr ‘Away’

18- year old Ayra Starr is the newest member of DonJazzy’s Mavin crew. She released her EP this month and her lead single ‘Away’ charts high on Apple music’s most-played songs in Nigeria. Not a lot of people knew her just a month ago but the quality of her music has made the talk of the town in Nigeria.

Femi Kuti ‘As We Struggle Everyday’

“‘As We Struggle Everyday’ is about how hard people work every day to make ends meet and still go to vote corrupt politicians into power who are meant to be in jail,” says Femi Kuti, Fela Kuti’s oldest son. Femi is expected to release a project this year, it should be interesting to hear what he has to say in the wake of the political climate stirred by the #ENDSARS protests.

Dolapo ‘Interest’ ft Ms Banks & Oxlade

UK-based singer, Dolapo, recruits rapper Ms Banks and Oxlade for this fiery feel-good single. She only released one single last year but she starts off this year with a bang. Her sound seems to have changed a bit but her voice remains lovely as ever.

Bella Shmurda ‘Rush’

Cash App, Dangbana Orisa, and now Rush, Bella Shmurda is a man in form. There’s something special about Bella Shmurda at the moment, he has a relatable vibe about him and his songs are getting people moving. He encourages people to live their lives how they want to in his first single of 2021.

Bankuli & Not3s ‘Foreign’

Bankuli has a thing for making good music happen and with ‘Foreign’ he found the right artist for the right beat which is always a powerful combination. UK-based Not3s traveled back home to Lagos to record this catchy song and it looks like they had a lot of fun shooting the video.

CKay ‘Kiss Me Like You Miss Me’

CKay promised to release a project this year and if the songs are going to be anything like ‘Kiss Me Like You Miss Me’ then we might have a strong contender for album of the year. He doesn’t say much on this love song but the vibes will get you feeling good.

Nao ‘Antidote’ ft Adekunle Gold

“We wrote ‘Antidote’ as a musical remedy 4 U during these times and as an ode to our daughters, who were both born weeks apart from each other during the pandemic,” Nao wrote on Instagram. “This song is a summer remedy for your winter days.” Nao & Adekunle Gold is the duo we never knew we needed, what a collab!
