Meet the 4 Black Movies Stars Who Won Big at The 79th Golden Globes Awards

On Sunday evening, four Black movie stars made history at the 79th annual Golden Globes Awards.

The anticipated ceremony, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was held in a closed venue in adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols caused by rising Omicron variant cases.

While the event was not live streamed, the organizers disclosed the winners of the 25 nomination categories on social media and their website.

Representing the Black community in this list of winners are Ariana DeBose, Barry Jenkins, MJ Rodriguez, and Will Smith.

Ariana DeBose

30-year-old actress Ariana DeBose went home as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in musical film ‘West Side Story’ (2021). DeBose made her television debut competing on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.

Barry Jenkins

Barry Jenkins, American film Director, screenwriter and producer won the Golden Globe award of Best Limited Series for his series, ‘The Underground Railroad’.

MJ Rodriguez

Michaela Antonia Jaé Rodriguez, born January 7, 1991, is an American actress and singer. Rodriguez was awarded the Best Actress in a Television Series for her performance in ‘Pose’.

Will Smith

While renowned actor, Will Smith was unsurprisingly named the Best Actor for excelling while playing as Venus and Serena William’s father in the Oscar-tipped ‘King Richard’.
