Egypt Mourns as Cinema Icon Samir Ghanem Loses Battle to COVID-19

Egyptian cinema star, Samir Ghanem has passed away at age 84 from COVID-19 complications.

Ghanem, a comedian and actor, had been admitted to intensive care in April after being diagnosed with COVID-19 in Cairo. He remained at the hospital until he passed away on Thursday.

His wife, Dalal Abdel Aziz has also been admitted and is receiving treatment.

Ghanem is survived by his two daughters, Donia and Amy who are also actresses.

Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Ines Abdel Dayem mourned his passing by saying the whole Arab world had lost a comic icon who filled lives daily with joy.

Born January 15, 1937 in Assiout, Samir Ghanem led an indelible mark in the entertainment industry across North Africa and the Arab world.

His famous works include “Hi Doctor”, with George Sidhoum and his wife Dalal Abdel-Azziz in 1981, “Les maries’ with Chirine in 1981 and Fares Ibnou Khayban in 1987.
