UK Singles Afrobeats Chart Launched

,,Fuse ODG, Ghanaian- British recording artist, has raved on about creating a new narrative of Africa through Afrobeats. His Tina movement- acronym for This Is New Africa- that led into a popular album advocates for elevating the profile of Africa and Africans across the globe.

Afrobeats is an instrumental launchpad for creatives who wish to incorporate the catchy African rhythm and sounds into tracks and albums to share with the world. As many African artists, including but not limited to ,,Burna Boy, ,,Tiwa Savage, ,,Sauti Sol, ,,Mr. Eazi and ,,Davido have quickly claimed fame across the continent, Afrobeats is fondly listened to in the United Kingdom.

On 26th July 2020, the Official Charts Company will be unveiling the, ,,‘Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show,’ on BBC Radio 1Xtra. Following the launch, every Sunday (2pm GMT) Afrobeats charts will be published on Spotify and OfficialCharts.com. The Head of Programmes at BBC Radio 1Xtra noticed the high demand for Afrobeats in the UK, and claimed that such a chart has been,,, ‘long overdue.’

A Brief History of Afrobeats

Released in 2012, ,,Oliver Twist,, by D’Banj was the first song that brought Afrobeats to the limelight on the UK charts (at number 9!) Since 2012, many artists have fused traditional instrumental sounds with upbeat studio tunes to revolutionise the music industry. Thereafter, the genre of Afrobeats grew rapidly in the UK as loads of African rappers, singers and music producers blended their heritage in their music. In 2016, Drake brought even more attention to Afrobeats by featuring WizKid in his song, ,,One Dance that was a top track that summer. There has been a great increase in Afrobeats concerts being fully sold out in metropolitan areas across the UK- from London to Manchester, Sheffield, Cardiff, Leeds and more. As the years have gone by, Afrobeats artists have spent close to 90 weeks in the Official Chart Top 40, being celebrated for musical gifts and hard work that has gone into curating absolutely incredible songs.
