The Man Who Created 600 Ice Cream Flavors

Tapiwa Guzha

A Zimbabwe-born man Tapiwa Guzha has taken up a challenge to increase Africa’s love for ice cream.

Guzha, who has a PhD in Molecular Biology, has used his expertise in inventing more than 600 ice cream flavors which are sold in his restaurant, Tapi Tapi situated in Cape Town, South Africa.

Appearing as a guest on BBC’s Focus on Africa, he said he wants Africans to embrace their culinary heritage.

“There’s an opportunity to decolonize the foodscape in the city, in the country, and indeed on the continent,” he added.

A customer who spoke to BBC said the range of ice cream flavors available at Tapi Tapi teach people about cultures all over Africa.

“There’s a language there, there’s a history there, there’s a people in there,” they said.
