South African Actress Kim Engelbrecht Becomes Fifth Actress To Be Nominated For Best Actress At International Emmys

South African actress Kim Engelbrecht has followed up her 2022 South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) Best Actress win with an International Emmy Best Actress nomination both for her title role in the M-Net crime series Reyka

Engelbrecht makes history as the fifth African actress to be nominated for the International Emmy after Menna Shalabi (Every Week On A Friday) in 2021, Thuso Mbedu (Is’thunzi) in 2017 and 2018, Lerato Mvelase in 2010 and Brenda Ngxoli in 2007 for Home Affairs. 

Reyka is a thriller series that centers around the title character who after being kidnapped as a child in 1994 apartheid South Africa, escapes and as an adult, works as a criminal profiler investigating a string of brutal murders in Kwa-Zulu Natal by a serial killer. She deals with her traumatic childhood past, which somehow also helps her get into the minds of Africa’s notorious criminals. The TV drama was the subject of instant critical acclaim, winning four out of the eight South African Film and Television Awards it was nominated for at this year’s award ceremony. Veteran South African actress Engelbrecht’s stellar performance in the show has also not gone unnoticed, as the artist received the award for Best Actress in a TV Drama during the same ceremony. Now, having garnered attention across the world, Engelbrecht has yet to let us down with her talent which has now earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the International Emmys.
