Updated: Aug 3, 2020
AfroBeats superstar WizKid and Grammy-nominated recording artist H.E.R. team up for his latest release “Smile.” The release is a promotional single for his upcoming album Made in Lagos and follows his 2019 releases “Joro” and “Ghetto Love.” The two musicians take the role of lovers on the breathy and light track that is heating up our Summer. On their shared verse they croon:
You're just a blessing to me /
I thank baba God for your love (Your love /
Ho uh-uh)l on, my' baby /
Showed me what I couldn't see (Ah-ah) /

Omoge mi forever, be my paradise /
Honey, you're my sugar, you dey sweet like Caroline /
Baby you're my prisoner, I go give you all my time oh /
Sweet baby Geee /

The collaboration is a success in a relatively long line of genre-bending singles performed by both African and American artists, helping each to crossover and build a larger following in a foreign market. WizKid has proven particularly adept at the international collaboration, appearing on Canadian recording artist Drake’s global smash hit “One Dance” and on American superstar Beyoncé’s Black girl empowerment anthem “Brown Skin Girl.” The latter track being off of The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack album which enlisted African artists Shatta Wale, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, and Salatiel, among others.
AfroBeats on the whole is achieving overdue recognition in the “Western” markets. Nigerian acts like Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage are seeing huge success in North America and Europe. The genre was just awarded a singles chart in the UK. Simultaneously, American artists like J. Cole, Chance the Rapper, and Cardi B are recognizing the West African market and flying out to perform for sold-out crowds.
