Highly Melanated and Emmy Nominated: 2020's Black Emmy Nominees

Updated: Aug 13

The Television Academy announced the 2020 Emmy nominees earlier this week and Black actors made up a record 34% of those nominated. The acting honorees represent characters from a vast array of experiences representing a shift in the way Hollywood allows Black stories to be portrayed.

Euphoria’s Zendaya, Watchmen’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Insecure’s Yvonne Orji secured each of their first nominations. The categories for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Music Direction, and Outstanding Choreography For Variety Or Reality Programming run particularly deep with Black talent, each having three of more Black nominees.

Fans of Pose were quick to point out their frustration over the Academy’s failure to nominate any of the show’s trans actresses, namely Mj Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson and Hailie Sahar, for the second year in a row. Another notable snub is Showtime’s late night talk show Desus and Mero which has expanded the scope of what late night can be and been particularly adept at entertaining through the Covid-19 crisis.
