Barbados Declares Rihanna “National Hero” During First Presidential Inauguration

Newly independent republic Barbados has declared renowned pop singer Rihanna as a national hero and bestowed her with the title, “Right Excellent”.

Rihanna, who is the most popular person from Barbados, was honored on Tuesday as the Caribbean island during the country’s inauguration of its first President – Dame Sandra Mason.

At the event, Barbadian Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, said to the crowd, “[o]n behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty.”

She further prayed that Rihanna “continue to shine like a diamond” in reference to the multi-Grammy winner’s 2012 hit song, Diamonds.

While this recognition has made headlines and drawn Rihanna’s praises across social media platforms, it is not the first time the singer and fashion mogul would be credited in her country.

In 2018, she was appointed as an ambassador of Barbados and earlier in 2008, the country’s former Prime Minister, David Thompson declared an annual Rihanna Day.

Recall that despite gaining independence from Britain in 1966, Barbados just elected its first ever president in October 2021. ,For the past 55 years, the Caribbean Island had been under the leadership of Queen Elizabeth.
