Nigerian Singer Tems Makes History With Oscars Nomination

Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems has been nominated for the The 95th Academy Awards ceremony which are scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 12, 2023.

Following her recent Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to ‘Lift Me Up,’ the lead single from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which she co-wrote alongside Rihanna, who also performed the song, producer Ludwig Göransson, and director Ryan Coogler.

The song received immediate critical acclaim and commercial success as it was praised for its writing and Rihanna’s soulful performance as well as debuted and peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

With this nomination. Tems has the distinction of being the first Nigerian artist to receive an Oscar nomination. Earlier in 20202, she had earned the distinction of being the first African female artist to debut or top the charts with her collaboration with Drake and Future on Wait For U which sampled Tems’ song ‘ Higher’.
