Nigerian-Canadian artists, Tome & TOBi nominated for Canada’s prestigious 2021 Juno Awards

Afrofusion artist, Tome along with rapper and singer TOBi have been nominated for Canada’s prestigious music awards show; the 2021 Juno Awards.

The Juno awards are presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. Soon after the release of her sophomore album, Bigger Than 4 Walls in early 2020, Tome released a gospel-inspired track titled I Pray featuring the legendary Sean Kingston.

She speaks about how different adversaries wish to knock her down and take her sight, but she says “No, No Fighting, No Cussing, No War,” instead encouraging “Love And Affection For All” before Sean Kingston hops on to sing about his troubles involving financial difficulties, taking accountability for his sins, and ultimately thanking God for the good life. The combination gives off such a smooth and powerful track that Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (CARAS) nominated the song for the reggae recording of the year.

“It was a little surreal, getting that information, just checking it out and seeing that I was nominated for both contemporary R&B and Rap was very special for me for sure,” says TOBi, “if I go back to five years ago when I first started putting out music professionally, this is one of the things that I aspired for.”

Being nominated for different categories says a lot about TOBi’s style, his debut album Still, released in 2019 received high praise from respectable media such as Billboard, i-D, & PAPER. TOBi took advantage and in 2020 released his sophomore album ELEMENTS Vol. 1, which has been making waves worldwide as it has accumulated millions of streams.

Both Tome and TOBi are good examples of Africans in the diaspora that are making a name for themselves. We’re excited for what the future holds for these two extremely talented artists.
