Michaela Coel, the I May Destroy You creator and star, has entered the Marvel world in the most exciting way. She has joined the cast of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Production of the film is currently underway in Atlanta with the release date set as July 8, 2022. While plot details as well as the character Coel will play are being kept under wraps, fans have excitedly taken to Twitter with some possible theories.

Coel skyrocketed to fame in 2020 with her critically acclaimed HBO Max series I May Destroy You, a British drama television series she created, wrote, co-directed, executive produced and starred in! The show received four Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Director, Writing, Acting, and Best Limited Series.

Michaela Coel’s other onscreen credits include Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Black Mirror and Chewing Gum (which she also wrote and starred in).

It is expected that much of the cast from the original Black Panther, which includes Lupita Nuong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, and Winston Duke, will return.

The expectations for this sequel are definitely very high. The first Black Panther grossed $700 million domestic (making it the fourth film to ever do so) and was also Marvel’s first Oscar nomination for Best Picture. While living up to those accomplishments is not expected following the loss of the film’s star, I would imagine that they all hope to make a movie that pays tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman’s memory.
