The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has again shed more insight on her unique experience as a Black woman married to the British Royal family.

She made this narration in the second episode of her new podcast Archetypes, titled ‘The Duality of Diva’ and featured music legend Mariah Carey as the special guest.

The two shared their experience as biracial women, with Markle highlighting that she had been treated as a mixed woman for the majority of her life because of her lighter complexion.

“You sort of fit in between,” she said. “You’re not treated as a Black woman. You’re not treated as a white woman,” Markle continued.

Everything however changed when she got married to Prince Harry and people started seeing her as a Black woman.

“That’s an interesting thing, a ‘mixed woman.’ Because I always thought it should be ok to say, ‘I’m mixed.’ Carey added. “It should be ok to say that, but people want you to choose.”

Carey also discussed her childhood, how the word ‘diva’ connects with her and how her parents’ divorce forced her to relocate many times.

“I didn’t fit in,” the 53-year-old singer said. “You know, it would be more of the Black area of town, or then you could be, where my mom chose to live, were the more white neighborhoods. And I didn’t fit in anywhere at all. I remember being in school in this predominantly white neighborhood where my mom felt comfortable, and I tried my best to feel comfortable. But this kid was in the hallway, and he said, ‘Mariah has three shirts, and she wears them on rotation!’ And it was true.”

The first episode of Markle’s Archetypes has featured tennis star player Serena Williams with the third episode slated to have actress, comedian and writer Mindy Kaling appearing.

Markle and Prince Harry started dating in July 2016. They made their first public appearance in September 2017 in Toronto at the Invictus Games, of which Harry was a founding patron.

Harry’s father Charles, Prince of Wales, announced their engagement on November 27, 2017. And on May 19, they held their wedding ceremony at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
