Mali Woman Gives Birth to Nine Babies

A 25-year-old woman from Mali on Tuesday gave birth to nine babies.

Prior scans before she gave birth had detected seven babies but at the end of delivery, Halima Cisse had birthed nonuplets in the Moroccan hospital the government flew her to.

Cases of women birthing more than six children successfully have been a rare feat and when the scan revealed Cisse was carrying more than 6 babies, she became the subject of discussion in Mali.

Having generated concern over her safety and the survival of the baby, the government stepped in and made the decision to let her have the babies in Morocco.

After staying five weeks in the Moroccan hospital, she was delivered of her babies through a Caesarean section on Tuesday.

“I’m very happy,” her husband, Adjudant Kader Arby told the BBC. “My wife and the babies [five girls and four boys] are doing well.”

The husband who has been in constant touch with the wife and her delicate situation exuded optimism and he is not burdened with the responsibilities of that many babies.

“God gave us these children. He is the one to decide what will happen to them. I’m not worried about that. When the almighty does something, he knows why,” he said.

“Everybody called me! Everybody called! The Malian authorities called expressing their joy. I thank them… Even the President called me.”

Fanta Siby, Mali’s Health Minister, also congratulated the medical teams in both countries for the “happy outcome.”

The mother and her babies are expected to return to Mali in some weeks.
