Emotions Flow as Mother and Son Reunite After 47 years of Separation

An Eritrean woman has had her lifelong prayers answered as she finally reunited with her son after 47 years of separation.

The woman, Zenebech, had appeared teary-eyed on Ethiopian TV channel EBS to narrate how she separated from her son when he was just a child. She lamented that she prayed daily to see her child before she died.

Not long after the emotional appearance on television, her son, Mussie Kahsay Tesfagergis reached out to her on the phone and flew from his residence in the United States to Ethiopia where his mother now lives.

As an emotional Mussie got home, he was reunited with his mother in a ceremony organized by the family and EBS. Both mother and son hugged and cried at intervals on their reunion.

When asked what he brought as a gift for his mother, Mussie said he brought himself.

“I feel happy when I see my mother after all these years. This is the happiest day of my life,” Mussie said. The mother also expressed her excitement saying, “I’d love to kiss the sky, but I couldn’t reach it. I owe my gratitude to all Ethiopians”.

Reacting to the emotional family moment, Mussie’s long-lost brother said: “I am really happy – I had only seen him in a photo.”

Mussie and his mother’s separation story dates back to 1966 when his Eritrean father took him and his two brothers to Asmara, the capital, leaving his mother. She received a letter years later that one of her sons had joined to fight with the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) while the other two children travelled abroad.
