“Iwájú” which roughly translates to “the future” in the Yoruba language, is a comic book collection created by Kugali that has been picked up as a new series by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Director Ziki Nelso said, “[t]his show will combine Disney’s magic and animation expertise with Kugali’s fire and storytelling authenticity. Iwájú represents a personal childhood dream of mine to tell my story and that of my people.” Set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria’s capital city, the plot of Iwájú has not yet been revealed, but Disney says the series will explore “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo.”

One of Kugali’s founders, Ugandan animator Hamid Ibrahim made a pledge to the BBC that his team’s work is “going to kick Disney’s ass,” and that comment caught the attention of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer Jennifer Lee. “I was intrigued,” she said, “here are three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by African artists to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories, and voices across the continent. Their talents as storytellers blew us away.”

We will be eagerly awaiting the debut of this new series in 2022!
