CKay’s 2019 Release, ‘Love Nwantiti’ Makes it Onto Billboard Charts

Afrobeats continues to rise as Nigeria’s CKay debuts on the Billboard charts. Love Nwantiti debuted last week on the Billboard Global 200 at number 30 but has now climbed to number 8. The song also debuted at number 21 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart but has now soared to number 4, putting CKay amongst the ranks of Lil Nas X and Ed Sheeran.

Following the success of Essence by Wizkid and Tems, Love Nwantiti becomes the second Afrobeats song to do well on the Billboard charts. Since its release in 2019, CKay and his team have worked hard to promote the song with an international campaign to carry it out of Nigerian borders by marketing remixes of the song with North African, East African, South African, German, French, Spanish, and Italian artists featured on the song.

However, a large part of why the song is only just now blowing up in the U.S. is because of the TikTok. Users of the social media app, TikTok, have taken a liking to the catchy song and its slew of remixes. There has been an overload of dance videos with the song and curious ears made the song the most searched for on Shazam, a popular app used to identify music.

All the attention has made CKay one of the most streamed Afrobeats artists on the major streaming platforms which is amazing for a song that was released 2 years ago. CKay released a project earlier this year, a 7-track EP titled Boyfriend. I suspect he and his team are working on some new music to help him take advantage of the momentum that is currently on his side.
