5 African Podcasts You Should Be Listening To

Since the first podcast started about 15 years ago, they have become increasingly more popular with all age groups. People talk about anything from news, cooking topics, fiction and non fiction stories, interviews, and much more. I’m sharing five of my favorite African podcasts that I have found interesting and think you will enjoy too!

Africa Daily

Africa Daily discusses every day news that is going on in Africa. They talk about anything from COVID vaccine updates, to presidential controversy and environmental issues. Check out this episode below discussing how both Malawi and South Sudan say they might destroy as many as 70,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab even when The World Health Organization begs them not to.

I Am African by Verastic

This podcast will have you hooked the first 5 minutes into hearing it. If you like podcasts that dig into uncomfortable conversations and discuss the things we are all thinking, then you need to check them out. Listen to this episode below called Why Africans Don’t have the Black Perspective.

The African History Network Show

Founded by Michael Imhotep, this podcast talks African History that I personally feel should be taught in schools. “We focus on Educating, Empowering and Inspiring people of African descent throughout the Diaspora and around the world.” Michael is the former host of the nationally syndicated radio show, “The Michael Imhotep Show” on The Empowerment Radio Network and guest hosted national radio shows including “The Warren Ballentine Show” and “The Roland Martin Show.” He has been featured in various documentaries called “Elementary Genocide 3: Academic Holocaust,” “The Black Friday: What Legacy Will You Leave” series and “Resurrecting Black Wall Street: The Blueprint.”

Michael Imhotep has over 40 of his lectures on DVD dealing with African and African American History, Economic Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and as an avid writer, his articles can be read at www.AfricanHistoryNetwork.com. His articles have also been published by YourBlackWorld.net, KultureKritic.com, FinancialJuneteenth.com and BlackThen.com.

Goodnight Azania

This podcast discusses a variety of themes relating to South African culture and society hosted by Mzamo Simone. He brings on many different guests that can speak on behalf of South Africa and it’s history as well as what it happening there right now.

One episode in particular that got my attention was Episode 12: Izibongo of isiZulu-speaking communities in 19th century South Africa and how these evolved over time. He interviewed Mbongiseni Buthelezi, the Executive Director at the Public Affairs Research Institute who had a lot to say on the subject matter.

Those Who Came Before Us

This podcast does about 8 episodes a year highlighting the stereotypes of Africa, where they derived and correcting every single one of them. It brings up Africa’s history as well, but only to shed light on what viewers don’t understand. I like that this podcast understands how badly represented Africa. For people who do not live there or haven’t ever visited at least once, I would highly recommend listening to some episodes.
